Gulf Coast Water Authority (GCWA) provides water for industry, agriculture, and municipalities in Brazoria, Fort Bend and Galveston Counties.  GCWA serves more than 185,000 customers in Galveston County, including all La Marque citizens. On Saturday, January 27, 2018, a major GCWA water main broke in Santa Fe, Texas, requiring City of La Marque to halt intake to our FM 1764 water distribution plant. 

The broken main is more than 30 inches in diameter and serves as a primary means of water delivery in Galveston County. The break also impacted all Santa Fe, Texas water customers. 

Brief timeline and explanation:

• La Marque receives GCWA water from two locations within our city limits.
• The water main break forced a halt of intake at FM 1764 water distribution plant and utilization of the City's well system. 
• Impacted areas are west of Interstate 45.
• The water main break also forced augmentation of the well water, resulting in changes to color and smell.
• GCWA estimates 90 days to repair the broken water main in Santa Fe, Texas.
• In the meantime, City of La Marque is revamping the treatment of well water in the hopes the balance of chemicals will remove undesirable smell and discoloration. City officials hope to achieve this the week of February 5, 2018.
• GCWA has plans to build a backup line to League City that could serve La Marque water customers in similar circumstances, avoiding these issues should another break occur on the water main in Santa Fe, Texas.

Important message from La Marque Public Services:

• At no time will water quality be impacted. 
• No changes to water pressure are expected. 
• This is not a boil water notice. 
• Water is safe to drink.
