A message from La Marque City Manager Tink Jackson:
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U. 5. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day."' As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veteran's service organizations -· amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
I am the brother, son and grandson of veterans who served during wartime to defend this nation and her citizens. Their sacrifice cannot be measured. That sacrifice must be remembered, appreciated and honored. All of us owe a significant debt to those who have served.
As a small measure of respect to all that have served our nation, per Section 402 of the City of La Marque Employee Handbook, I am hereby designating Monday, November 11, 2019, as a City of La Marque Holiday in observance of Veteran's Day.
Non-essential City offices will be closed on Monday, November 11, 2019, in observance of the holiday. Essential operations will be conducted in the same manner as all other observed holidays per the Employee Handbook and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
God Bless all of those who have given so much in service to their fellow citizens as part of our the United States Armed Forces!
