Community invited to join the La Marque Cemetery Board and Galveston County Master Gardeners for the 2017 Cemetery Clean Up Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 25 at 1709 Oak Street in La Marque.

La Marque, Texas (March 23, 2017) – The La Marque Cemetery Board has partnered with Galveston County Master Gardeners for the 2017 Cemetery Clean Up Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 25 at 1709 Oak Street in La Marque. Volunteers are invited to attend and help the Cemetery Board plant trees and plants in an effort to beautify the grounds. In the event of heavy downpours, the event will be rescheduled. An official weather determination will be made at 8:15 a.m. on the City of La Marque Facebook page.
According to David Pennington, Cemetery Board Chair, the Galveston County Master Gardeners start a new class each year and each class is responsible for a special project. This year, they’ve selected La Marque Cemetery. Master Gardeners met with the Cemetery last week Board and assisted with tree and plant choices that are drought resistant, indigenous to our climate, hearty and low maintenance.
“La Marque Cemetery is one of the most historic places in our City,” Pennington said. “The history dates back to 1895. It is important that we preserve that heritage and we’re thrilled that the Master Gardeners have chosen us as their project this year.”
In addition to the annual Cemetery Clean Up event, the Cemetery Board facilitates a Wreaths Across America event each December. The mission is to Remember fallen U.S. veterans, Honor those who serve and Teach children the value of freedom by coordinating wreath-laying ceremony at our local cemetery.
The La Marque Cemetery Board is one of many Boards and Commissions comprised of compassionate volunteers who donate their time to our community. For information, visit www.cityoflamarque.org or contact Robin Etheredge, City of La Marque City Clerk at 409-938-9259.
