La Marque, Texas (December 3, 2016) - The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Galveston County through Sunday evening. Citizens of La Marque are encouraged to stay off the streets if possible. High water has made several streets impassable and stranded motorists have been rescued. Wakes caused by motorists driving through high water is detrimental to homeowners with water in their homes and garages.
Heavy downpours began today between 11:00 a.m. and noon. The National Weather service reported more than 11 inches of rainfall at press time. Intermittent heavy downpours are expected to continue through Monday. Flooding in coastal communities is imminent as tidal rise of the bay and bayous will increase water levels.
There are some persistent drainage issues in the Lake Road area and FM 1765. City officials are monitoring ditches and encourage citizens to stay away from barricaded thoroughfares.
