[ARCHIVED] Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event April 8 at Gulf Greyhound Park

A household hazardous waste collection event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 at Gulf Greyhound Park, 1000 FM 2004, in La Marque. By JULIE MASTERS http://www.galvnews.com/opinion/guest_columns/article_098c746c-f2aa-510e-9e52-3ccf7ed01826.html

A household hazardous waste collection event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 at Gulf Greyhound Park, 1000 FM 2004, in La Marque. This is a fantastic opportunity to rid yourselves of unwanted accumulations of old paint, lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides, household cleaners, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, aerosol cans, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, thermometers, tires (six max) and electronics, at no cost to you.

This eco-friendly event is the result of a grant from the Houston-Galveston Area Council, with a portion of the funding provided by the Southeast Texas Resource Conservation and Development Council from the settlement of an enforcement action brought by TCEQ.

The City of League City, in partnership with City of Dickinson and Keep Dickinson Beautiful, will host the event, with in-kind contributions from the City of La Marque, Galveston County Health District, Galveston County Nuisance Abatement, Mackey Mechanical, Shred Pro, Gulf Greyhound Park and the City of Texas City.

There will be no need for you to get out of your vehicle, as hazardous items, tires, electronics and white goods will be unloaded for you as you make your way through the site. Please secure paints and any flammables and corrosives in a non-leaking container, held securely in place by newspaper to prevent breakage during transport to the site. Always place household hazardous waste materials in the trunk of your car or back of your truck to avoid breathing in fumes while driving. Boxes and containers holding household hazardous waste should be labeled as to the contents for easier and quicker unloading and separation. This is a “household only” event. Tires, electronics, white goods and hazardous materials from businesses will not be accepted.

What will not be accepted from anyone is: medical waste/pharmaceuticals, ammunition, explosives, compressed gas cylinders, business/commercial waste, household garbage and trash, smoke detectors, radioactive waste, PCBs and dioxins.

With hurricane season closing in, it is imperative that we take this free opportunity to dispose of these items properly to avoid unnecessary damage to our property and water resources. Electronics, tires, household hazardous waste and shredded paper will all be recycled, keeping tons of these toxic items out of the landfill.
